Transplantation can generate expenses for organ recipients and living donors. To address high out-of-pocket costs, some patients engage in medical crowdfunding; the practice of raising money for medical services via the internet. This study characterizes crowdfunding campaigns for the transplant population and explores the ethical and policy issues associated with crowdfunding.
