The OPTIMAL Observational Study

An observational study of a dedicated preservation and assessment service to optimize organ utilization for hard-to-place kidneys (“OPTIMAL”)

University of Wisconsin has partnered with a normothermic preservation device company for a multi-site trial, to test hard to place kidneys in normothermic perfusion. Normothermic perfusion mimics conditions in the body to test how the kidney might perform once transplanted. Once performance is checked and deemed appropriate for transplantation, kidneys are transported to the University of Wisconsin to be transplanted. From there standard of care is performed and data points are taken from different time points post-transplant.
